Aaron-

Turns out you're absolutely right, and the manual is absolutely wrong. As it
says in the manual after describing how to customize your settings to the
maestro font default.ftm file in the Component File folder...

-From now on, every time you double-click the Finale program icon, choose
New/Default Document from the File menu or choose New/Document With Setup
Wizard, a fresh, untitled copy of this Maestro Font Default file appears on
the screen, formatted according to your preferences.

Right.

I made the changes to the appropriate template in the Document Styles folder
instead, and it now works fine. Thanks for your help!

Best,
Art

In Fin08 and newer, I believe Maestro Font Default.ftm is only used if
you press Default Document from the Launch Window, or do File | New |
Default Document.

If you use the Setup Wizard, in which you have to select a Document
Style, the template used as a base is one of the templates in the
Document Styles folder in the Finale folder.

Aaron.
