Hi all, Just a note about Finale 2010 (Windows XP) and expression editing.
I've been working for the past week with Finale support over a huge delay in editing expressions -- 15+ seconds for the expression edit dialog to come up, and 5+ seconds for each character to be typed. It does not affect the text tool or the lyrics tool, only the expression editor. We went through everything, including using only Finale's default document, reviewing the entire system specs, and even unplugging all but the basic hardware. It turns out that Finale 2010 (unlike versions from 2007 and back) has an issue with large font installations. I currently have 4,900 font files for thousands of different documents (books, articles, newsletters, white paper design, scores, etc.). It appears that Finale goes through the font list each time a letter is typed! (4,900 font files sounds like a lot, but it isn't. Many are font families with variations of bold and italic versions of regular, light, extended, wide, condensed, etc. Augureau alone has 27 font files, Akzidenz Grotesk has 22, Bauer Bodoni has 16, Baskerville has 13, and even Bach has 10.) So if you're having trouble with expression edit slowness, that's the problem. I think it qualifies as a bug, since no other software that I use (and there's a lot of design, editing, audio and video suites) has problems with the large font library. I've suggested to the very helpful and comprehensive tech support person that it may be a bug. I hope a bugfix version of 2010 appears.
