Hi, a bit late I know. Too many fonts can cause a huge amount of problems on a windows platform. I have to handle 1.5 million fonts while keeping customers CI when designing new handouts/posters/etc.
I am using FontExpert which enables me to install fonts temporarily. Once the fonts are embedded in a document ie. Quark or Creative Suite there is no need to keep them installed. And, as a side-effect, windows will boot much faster. You can create dif. worklists of fonts with a one-click option if you have to open older docs w/o embedding-capabilities. Maybe it helps. Now it is clear why they couldn't!
