I am grateful for all the suggestions. Thanks! I discovered that one of my problems seems to be caused by a compatibility issue with Windows Movie Maker. I was getting the sound OK, but a scrambled screen at the top and a big green block below.
I followed the suggestions here: http://www.vatofknow.com/archives/112 which seems to have solved the problem. So the original free program I used seems to have worked fine...
