Just one more example of the fine customer service we who pay get to 
enjoy.  ;-)

Seriously, though, for a long time it was thought that the authorization 
number was based on several factors (at least as I recall the 
discussions about this process on this list and lists for other programs 
which have similar anti-piracy measures):
processor
graphics card (and ram)
system ram
hard disk
operating system

If any of those were changed significantly the authorization program 
would view it as being a different computer and refuse to run until it 
was re-authorized.

When you did the "restore" did you also change any hardware?  And did 
you restore to an earlier operating system?
