Thanks Roger and Jonathan,

I solved the problem (with Greg Hamilton's help) and am reporting only in case
someone else encounters the same issue.

It turned out that, in the process of chasing down printer accessibility issues
(that had disappeared), Apple Support had me download a more recent driver for
the HP 5000. Warning: DON'T DO THIS!

The problem had nothing to do with internal printer settings - I hadn't messed
up any menu selections. It was all in the driver, and the newer one (V 8.1) is
incompatible with OS 10.8. Greg has the older driver (V 6.6) and sent it to me
over iChat. Resetting up the printer in System Preferences and directing it to
the correct driver solved the problem. (NB It had been working correctly
until I started farting around trying to solve the wireless accessibility
issue, so I had reason to hope that returning to earlier settings and
circumstances might work.)

I have resourceful, informed and generous friends.

Back to normal activity.

Thanks,

Chuck
