I have to substitute articulations (and chord suffixes, and expressions) pretty
often, and this is how I do it. The key here is knowing what the articulation
WAS supposed to be. If the font is missing, you might not be able to know this.
I would use Document menu>Data Check>Font Utilities to search for the missing
font and replace with Maestro, so I could at least see what the articulation
was.

Make sure the articulations I WANT are loaded, using a library if necessary.

Click anywhere in the score to open up the Selection dialogue box. The new
articulations I loaded are at the end of the window, so I start at the top.

Click the Delete button for each articulation. If it is not used, it goes away
immediately. If it is used, a notice crops up saying "This is in use (etc.)" so
I click replace with... and select the new articulation from the library that I
have loaded. Hit Return.

Keep going until I have deleted all the old articulations. Since this is a very
old file dating from before articulations had proper positioning, you probably
want to revert to default positioning on all articulations. For this I would go
to the Selection Tool, select All, then Utilities Menu>Change>Articulations...
hit return right away to restore everything to default positioning. You may
still have to adjust some things, but this is a good start.

I have a slightly different accent > designed to position a little higher to
miss the start point of slurs. I assign it to a metatool (usually Q, which is
just above A for accent) and every time I see an accent colliding, I click it
and double-tap Q, which changes it into my special accent.

Sorry this isn't easier, but it beats reassigning each one manually.
