Yes, you understood.  It was a sort of stupid question. I was getting hung up 
on getting a slightly different sound from each rather than identical and then 
being able to save that variant.  I need the same with english horn.  I'll futz 
with it some more.  Unclear whether I can save the pan parameters et al without 
changing the host sound.  That's something I can figure out for myself but if 
someone knows of hand...

In the Aria player, can't you just put in another instance of the same 
instrument in a different channel? I've done this kind of thing often. If you 
need to switch back and forth in one instrument, you can put in an invisible 
expression to switch channels. If you want this on two separate staves, you 
should be able to control the panning in the mixer.

Or am I not understanding your issue?
