Thanks Geoff. That is essentially the solution I stumbled on before I saw your response.
I take you point about the possibility of making pencil marks mid-section, but if there are important punches, I try to indicate them anyway. I'm not sure I have seen a drummer with a pencil recently. :) But seriously, most of the drummers I play with use their ears a lot more than their eyes, so I try to give them what is most comfortable.
