I know that many texts tell us not to use dotted-rests, but I've never had a problem with them, especially dotted-quarter rests in 6/8 and 9/8. It's so obvious it's one half one third of the measure.
The best way is the way which is the clearest to the largest number of musicians, not what authors of books on notation tell us. In my opinion. I've never had a problem with people reading music I have engraved using dotted rests. David H.
