Sorry, I completely misunderstood. You WANT the extension, but you want it ABOVE the staff.
Add a hard space in the first syllable on the new system, then drag it above the staff. It will have its own word extension. A hard space is alt-spacebar on a Mac; I don’t know what the character is on Windows.
