I often have this issue to and, in my case, I found out that by reselecting the 
keyboard (even though it looks already selected) from the 'Input Device' menu 
in MIDI/Audio --> Device Setup --> MIDI/Internal Speaker Setup, the speedy 
entry tool starts working again.
