What’s going on is that Sibelius 8.6 doesn’t yet recognize the MusicXML 3.1 format or the new .musicxml extension. The best approach for now is just what you are doing. That is, export with the .xml suffix and ignore the Sibelius error message. The message incorrectly says “older” when it means “newer”.
Our Dolet MusicXML plug-in for Sibelius only does export, not import, so that won’t make any difference in this situation. Most MusicXML readers will just ignore the new MusicXML 3.1 features that they don’t understand, so the exchange should still work fine. If you get annoyed by the error messages, you can change your MusicXML preferences to export MusicXML 3.0 files instead. But don’t forget to change it back once your other applications start adding MusicXML 3.1 support.
