Finally applied to the release-4_2 branch; now I'm working on porting it
to head.  Meanwhile, should I patch the various .cvsignore files to ignore
files generated during 'make distcheck'?  Also, is it worth combining
po/ChangeLog into the main ChangeLog, so that there is only one log to
worry about?

ChangeLog.  Release 3.2 predated the current CVS history, but the
ChangeLog appears to be accurate all the way back to 1987.
