Dear list members, An online social networking/organizing web site for permaculture enthusiasts is ready and running. You can consider FLXpermaculture.net as a beefed-up, multi-dimensional, and more social extension of the fingerlakespermaculture@lists.mutualaid.org listserv.
The site (http://www.flxpermaculture.net) can be used for meeting others, organizing collective projects, documenting your work, discussion, and promoting your permaculture-related enterprise or activist work. Think of it as a facebook for Finger Lakes Permaculture Network! FLXpermaculture.net can also be used to promote, organize and document projects coming out of the FLX PC Network Winter 2009 Consulta scheduled for Sunday, Feb., 8. (Visit the website for details.) The site's technology is eminently collaborative. It allows you to compose and keep track of your individual and collective ideas, build on each other’s ideas and text, and save it all in a place that can be accessed by anyone at any time. You can… …post internet resources on it. …tell the story of your own permaculture work (share your success and failures!) …link to your own websites. …insert your already existing websites into FLXpermaculture.net. …build your own website as a subsection of FLXpermaculture.net. …create photo galleries. …invite others to join. (Site is not limited to residents of our area.) …add widgets. …RSS feeds. …start discussions ...let us know when there is a good permie party! Two things limit what you can do: lack of creativity and membership. Much of flxpermaculture.net is still a blank slate. With almost no webpage building skills you can add to it. However, you'll see that with the more ideas you have and the more web writing skills you acquire you will find this site can accommodate. You are encouraged to sign up as a member. Once you have membership you can create and edit pages, "friend" other network members, join discussions and elect to receive weekly updates of additions and changes to the whole site or specific pages. Anyone can subscribe to the site’s RSS feed. Note that the site is set up into "Zones." Please give careful consideration to which zone your content best belongs in. As time passes, if the site moderators find that pages are being misplaced or a zone needs organization, they will touch base with the creators and determine if a structure of pages in a zone needs to be modified. The home page will be reserved for an RSS feed of the email list, recent changes to the site, and to any significant events in the local permaculture community. Only moderators will be able to edit the home page. Contact one of them to get your event on the front page. All other pages can be edited. OK! Are you new to using a wiki or Wetpaint site like FLXpermaculture.net? There's not much to it! Read through the following and try making your own personal page to try things out. Pick your zone. If your content is more personal than organizational, then select from the page directory--in the left hand column--zone 1 for members. If you have a local collective effort, then select zone 2. If your zone is selected, then click the “add page” link found below the page directory. Once your page is named and created, select it from the page directory. Now you are ready to create your content. Start by clicking on the 'EasyEdit' button. Type something. Delete something. Add a link from text to an external web site by clicking on the 'link' icon and providing a URL. Embed an image in the page by clicking on the 'photo' icon above. Wetpaint allows photo dimensions UP TO 400x500 pixels. Image size should be less than 500k. Insert virtually anything you want (video, audio, IM/chat space, document, rss feed...) by clicking on 'widget' in the toolbar. Play around and get used to moving around at FLXpermaculture.net. Before long you'll feel at home... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - http://www.flxpermaculture.net regional regenerative resources - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - _______________________________________________ FLX Permaculture Network listserv RSS, archives, subscription & listserv info: http://www.flxpermaculture.net Support the list host by donating to: http://www.mutualaid.org
