I had a couple of replies to my problem about being unable to install xfree86-base.

I see, this might indeed indicate a small bug in Fink. From your
output my guess is that it deletes the wrong source file. So try to
delete the correct (probably broken) source file:

sudo rm /sw/src/X410src-2.tgz

Then try your install again. Or alternativly, install it via apt-get:

apt-get install xfree86-base
apt-get install xfree86-rootless

I did this vary carefully and, having removed /sw/src/X410src-2.tgz, the command
executed perfectly though it appears that the file somehow must have been installed already:

[203-79-72-140:~] vignaux% sudo apt-get install xfree86-base
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Sorry, xfree86-base is already the newest version.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I still do not know if it was a small bug in fink; whatever, the remedy worked.
Thankyou for your help.
