If you get such rather precise errors, you should not ask others for help before finding out yourself what format the damn thing is in. We can't know. You can. What does "file /sw/src/fort77-1.18.tar.gz" say? Is it still the old 680 byte html-message, because you did not copy the tarball from the desktop to /sw/src?
