Hi,
I recently tried to install xfree86 4.2 from fink unstable. (I was going to use only things from stable, but I wanted rootless X, and it seemed silly to use snapshots of prerelease versions of 4.2 from stable instead of the release version of 4.2 from unstable.) Anyway, I installed xfree86-base and xfree86-rootless, and whatever other dependent packages fink chose to install, but I think I must have missed something... Here's what I have installed: fink list xfree86 Reading package info... Information about 709 packages read in 27 seconds. [non-installed packages snipped] i xfree86-base 4.2.0-4 XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and d... i xfree86-rootles 4.2.0-2 MacOS X/Darwin XFree86 display server. And here's what happens when I try to run startx: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx -- -quartz -rootless 2002-02-09 16:49:23.630 XDarwin[648] No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist file, exiting giving up. xinit: Connection refused (errno 61): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. I do not have a .xinitrc file (I was waiting to create one until things were at least somewhat working), but I'm pretty sure from my experiences with linux that things should get a good bit further along in starting up before that matters. Here are the symlinks in X11R6/bin: ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X* lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 14 Feb 7 13:10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> XDarwinStartup -rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 3574848 Feb 7 04:36 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwin lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 48 Feb 7 13:10 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwinQuartz -> /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/MacOS/XDarwin -rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 9732 Feb 7 04:36 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwinStartup [unrelated things snipped] But my guess is that the application XDarwin didn't get properly installed, since there's not much in there: ls -R /Applications/XDarwin.app Contents /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents: MacOS /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/MacOS: XDarwin Was I supposed to have installed XDarwin outside of fink? The installing xfree86 documentation on the fink web site mentions about 8 different ways to get X running on MacOS X, but of course doesn't mention xfree86 4.2, since it's in unstable. :-) But from what I could tell you only needed to download the XDarwin app from the XonX project if you were installing their version of the server, and not if you were installing the xfree86-rootless server via fink. But maybe I'm wrong, in which case I'd love more info on what else I should be installing, and where I should download it from. (The only unusual thing I've done with fink, which I don't think is relevant but which I'll mention for completeness, is that I ended up making /sw a symlink to a directory on a different partition, because I didn't have enough disk space on the / partition to download and compile xfree86-base. Ah, the joys of having a rev A iMac with an upgraded harddrive -- I have plenty of disk space (40G), but both boot partitions (MacOS X and 9) apparently had to be within the first 8G which means those partitions are crowded. ;-P But I tarred things up after installing fink (mv wasn't preserving file permissions properly, tsk tsk) and created my symlink, and fink doesn't seem to have noticed. Yah!) Thanks in advance for any help people can give me. Sara -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sara C.
