Let me forward you to the fink-beginner's list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), if you are indeed a neophyte.
System-xfree86 is only if you have already installed XFree86 from some other source than fink--it is a placeholder to let the system know you have XFree86 installed. It then provides a virtual package, X11. If you install xfree86-base, you also get this package, as well as if you use the commercial Xtools package, and install system-xtools. It looks like you have xfree86-base installed already. If this is true then you can install the server from a precompiled binary. Probably the easiest way is to do 'sudo apt-get install xfree86-server' in the Terminal. I'm not sure what the problem was with your build, but I'm downloading the package to see how it builds on my machine.
