Not exactly what you're trying, but have you considered OroborOSX?

What does your path say? 'startx' is typically in (I think) something like
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx -- are you getting X's basedir in your path?

Your problem could be as simple as adjusting your path enviromnent
variable, but if fixing that doesn't help, I recommend Oroborosx. It 
makes setting up & running X -- on top of Aqua or by itself from the
console -- easy. Simple OSXish pkg installer too.
