I'm still flummoxed by my proxy settings.

http proxy only- ftp is set for passive mode in the network settings.
I've tried turning the proxy settings off in the network panel and
using fink configure to set the proxy. Connection fails with sudo
dselect.

With the proxy set in network settings, curl [url] is blocked by the
proxy server. using curl -x 66.99.56.2:8081 [url] allows me to access
web sites through http.

I've tried entering the proxy into fink configure both as
http://66.99.56.2:8081 and 66.99.56.2:8081 with negative results.

fink list and fink install appear to work.

Of course, dselect and apt-get work from home, but gimp over a 56k
line is awfully slow!

Actually, I've got gimp-1.2.3.tar.gz in my /sw/src file- if I knew
how to install it, I'd do it. I've got the developer tools.

If it only were as simple as it sounds...
