        If you look at the top of the output that I sent, you'll see that 
there are other install commands that executed just fine.  In those cases 
however, the install command is echoed with the full path to install.  In 
the case that is failing the install command is echoed without a full path.
   In any event, doing a `which install` from the same shell  in which I am 
doing the fink install returns "/usr/bin/install".  I have never knowingly 
installed gnu darwin.  The only additional unix tools that I have 
installed have been samba and some tools through fink, and those include 
only the packages needed for XFree86 and the windomaker package.

        Thinking that the windowmaker package might have its own install, I 
cd'd into /sw/src/windowmaker-0.80.0-1 and did a `find * -name "install" 
-print`, and that returned nothing.  So, I still seem to be hopelessly 
lost.
