Try this:

sudo mkdir /private/tmp
sudo chown root.wheel /private/tmp
sudo chmod 1777 /private/tmp
sudo ln -s /private/tmp /tmp

That should take care of creating the directory with the proper
permissions, and the symlink.  You should be able to
run XDarwin again after the directory's been created.
