If anyone is curious how to do this, this is what is at the end of my
.xinitrc file. It checks to see if BlackBox is available first, and if not,
falls back on a vanilla xterm (and hopefully twm).

    # set up windowmanager
    if which blackbox 2>&1 >/dev/null ;then
        bbkeys -i &
        bbpager &
        exec blackbox
    else
        twm &
        exec xterm
    fi
