What happens if you do

fink check /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo/libxml2-2.4.23-5.info

(that will verify that the .info file is really OK). Other than that, I am clueless. Anybody else have a good idea?

Clearly the info file is corrupt (probably line endings) as you can see, it is spamming out part of the info file as he indexes, he pasted this several times:

 [borcim70:~] chia% fink index
 sudo /sw/bin/fink index
 Password:
 Reading package info...
 Homepage: http://www.xmlsoft.org/ in

 Updating package index... done.
 [borcim70:~] chia% fink list libxml2
Information about 1713 packages read in 1 seconds.

 i libxml2-bin 2.4.25-3 XML parsing library, version 2
 i libxml2-shlibs 2.4.25-3 XML parsing library, version 2
 [borcim70:~] chia%

See how it spammed out "Homepage: " during the "reading package info..." step.
