No, I hadn't set those environment variables - I was trying to pass the /sw/include directory by hand, and I neglected /sw/lib. Setting the environment variables fixed the problem.

I was able to get xplanet-0.94 (<A HREF="http://xplanet.sourceforge.net";>here</A>) built from source without too many more problems. If anyone's interested, I had to disable animation-in-window (the glut library for OpenGL) and the PNM image libraries to get it to compile, using the following command:

./configure --without-animation --without-pnm; make

It's pretty!
