Okay,

Just finished installing mySQL. Trying to enter (per fink info mysql) the
root password and I get the following:

[Mathew-Rices-Computer:~] mat% mysqladmin -u root password new_password
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'
(2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

Now I know I'm probably missing something silly but could someone shed some
light on this error? I don't see anything like mysql.sock and can't locate
it on my drives. How does one check if mysqld is running. I assume it isn't
because I have yet to enter the root password and start things up.

I assume password in the above is my admin password and new_password is
whatever I want the mySQL_root password to be.

Package manager version: 0.11.0
Distribution version: 0.4.9.cvs
OS X 10.2.1, Jag Dev tools w/ August u/d

Thanks for any help,

-Mat
