...then it should start unless you get some error message during startup. I'd try 'sudo safe_mysqld &' once logged in, just to be sure.sudo daemonic enable mysql^^^^^ Did this too, and restarted.

Then the server is not running, or not running correctly. Retry starting it, as mentioned above.
