In the configure.log I suspect just these lines:

configure:1588: cd conftest && eval ${SHELL} /sw/src/automake-1.6.3-1/automake-1.6.3/lib/missing --run autoconf -o /dev/null conftest.ac
configure:1591: $? = 1
configure:1593: error: Autoconf 2.52 or better is required

Maybe 2.54 is worse than 2.52 ;-)

As always when configure fails, you should look at the end of the config.log file and see if it gives some more information.
