[Fink-beginners] dpkg/available

I am a Unix newbie who has taken the plunge. I have installed Fink inOSX 10.2 and everything was fine until some updates failed now I get this message while trying to update Fink.

The following package will be installed or updated:
fink
dpkg -i /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/base/fink_0.11.1- 1_darwin-powerpc.deb
dpkg: failed to open package info file `/sw/var/lib/dpkg/available' for reading: No such file or directory
### execution of dpkg failed, exit code 2
Failed: can't install package fink-0.11.1-1

Does anyone have a solution for this suddenly missing Directory?
