Short story: I want to run KOffice apps in XDarwin rootless with a
non-K window manager, but they don't seem to run properly. They run
just fine in KDE itself, so I know they're working. Just need to know
how / if I can tweak other WMs to run them.

Longer version:

Got the new Fink 0.5a installed on my Jaguar/10.2 Rev C iMac in
college. XDarwin (latest version, IIRC) was already installed. Also
had OroborOS-X onhand already. Proceeded to download xmms as a test.
Loaded up just fine with OroborOS-X running rootless, and also with
XDarwin/TWM running in fullscreen mode.

Now the biggie: (apt-)got the full KDE bundle, got it all installed ...
and to my relief it worked the very first time, once i'd figured out how
and where to edit .xinitrc. Loads and runs a little sluggish; and must
run fullscreen (won't run rootless) -- but it does the trick by and
large. I'm delighted.

However, what I *can't* seem to do is run the KDE/QT-based apps (KWord,
for example, or KMail) on any window manager other than KDE. If I
start them in terminal (or from a fullscreen non-K WM), it's evident
that they're trying to crank up; but in the end, nothing really ever
happens, and no windows ever appear. Don't know if the programmes are
freezing as such; but in the end, I end up having to shut down XDarwin
from Aqua to make them stop.) Can anyone help?

My Linux box at home (Mandrake 9.0) handles this matter just fine ...
and has always done so, straight out of the box (no tweaking required).
Although I normally run KDE on the home box, if I want to run KMail
under Enlightenment or IceWM, it gives me no problems whatsoever. I
guess I just naively assumed that this would work in Darwin, too. No
such luck.

In a perfect world, what i'd like to do is run IceWM or OroborOS-X
rootless in tandem with Aqua, so that i could have a WM with a light
footprint (i.e., better suited to an old Mac w/ slow-ish processor &
only 160mb RAM), wouldn't have to switch back and forth, but will still
have access to the KOffice apps, which I use at home. (This would also
enable me to ditch MSWord once and for all.)

In a less than perfect world, I suppose I've got the basic functionality
required as things now stand. But if someone could give me tweaking
tips so I can get a little closer to the perfect world, I'd be very much
obliged.

Also -- is anyone else having probs with sound on KDE? Mine doesn't
seem to like my soundcard (bog standard Rev C iMac soundcard, whatever
that is).
