Ben Hines and others gave me a good solution to my problems which were much like yours.
Apparently I had corrupted my development environment. I installed the December release of the Dev tools from Apple's website, then rebuilt my existing fink packages. I actually only rebuilt about 50% of them but at that point everything started working again.
