should I download the KDE desktop,
via fink commander, and install that to run kde
instead of using this min xwindow (twn)
that would be a better choice ? instead of messing around with .config files.

You should copy this file to your home directory and rename your copy to
.xinitrc and then modify it as needed.
2) You are probably running the default window manager (twm). Twm is
pretty minimal, and doesn't work well in rootless mode. If you are
running in fullscreen mode, then you can click on the background to get
the menu for twm--basically you can run an xterm but not much else. If
you control-click on an xterm it will give you a menu. However, if you
kill the one named login it will close your X11 session, because it is set
up to do so in xinitrc.
