Hi. A number of people reported the problem with LyX and xforms a while back. I thought this problem was fixed in 0.4.1a (and is certainly fixed in 0.5.x). In any case, here are a few things that you might try:

1. Make sure your fink install is fully up to date. (issue the selfupdate command)
2. If dselect still doesn't install xforms, then try compiling just xforms from source before attempting to install LyX from dselect. The command is:

sudo fink install xforms

3. If compiling from source doesn't work, I believe there was an alternative download site specified in the xforms finkinfo file. Find the xforms finkinfo file (should be in the /sw/fink/stable/main/finkinfo/x11/ folder). Open the file with a text editor capable of properly handling unix files (I think TextEdit should be fine for this). Find the line that starts with "Source:". There should be two of them, one with an http address and one with an ftp address. Comment the currently active line and uncomment the other line. Try compiling xforms from source again.

I recall various people reporting that solution 2 or 3 worked but YMMV. However, I am writing this completely from memory, as I no longer have fink 0.4.1a on my system, so I am pretty sure that one or the other will work, but not positive -- you've been warned.

On a slightly different note, if you are seriously interested in LyX, you might seriously consider upgrading to 10.2.x and fink 0.5.x. This is because fink 0.5.x contains the most recent version of LyX (1.2.x), whereas 0.4.1a contains only 1.1.6f3 (though 1.1.6f4 -- the last 1.1.6 release is in the "unstable" directory). I believe the LyX folks changed the document file format going from LyX 1.1.6 to LyX 1.2.x (making the new file not backward compatible) and 1.2.x contains some nice new features. So if you are going to seriously explore LyX, then it might be worthwhile to start with the most recent version. This will also solve your xforms problem as well, and as an additional incentive to upgrade, this will also allow you to use Apple's nice new X11 environment.

Finally, I have a page on using LyX on OSX which you might find useful <http://www.la.utexas.edu/~tnishino/osx_lyx/>. You might also find the page by Ronald Florence useful as well <http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_osx.html>.

Hope this helps.

Running fink 0.4.1a on my OSX 10.1.5 system, I fail installing LyX 1.1.6fix3-3 because dselect complains xforms isn't available. Is this solvable in any way? I would really like to install LyX to start learning UNIX and LaTeX.
