I attempted the fink selfupdate process which, after a few false starts, seemed to work at downloading all the files etc. However, after completing the download process it told me that the installation had failed for some reason and that I should do the following
fink selfupdate-cvs
then fink scanpackages
then apt-get update
The following is a snippet of what happened:
...................... etc.etc. (a lot of similar stuff above about 'moving away')
C dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/x11-wm/xfce-3.8.18-2.info

As a result of this failure, I thought I'd check the Fink FAQ at Sourceforge about why the selfupdate process didn't work (Q 3.14) and decided to try the reset of CVS directories with the command:
sudo find /sw/fink -type d -name 'CVS' -exec rm -rf {} \;
and then tried to selfupdate again.
This seemed to work until I got the following:
etc.........
d command 9)
make: *** [libbz2.dylib] Error 1
### execution of make failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling bzip2-1.0.2-1 failed

So what can I do now? When I did a fink list command, the following are the packages it lists with an (i) or i next to them:
[Julian-Woodss-Computer:/sw/fink] jfwoods% fink list
