I've searched everywhere for a solution, but I'm unable to shut down X correctly. I launch X after logging into OS X as ">console" and using startx from the command line. I'm using KDE 3.1 and/or Gnome 1.4, fink distributions running the latest fink distribution of XFree86. OS X 10.2.3. Whenever I use the logout function of KDE or GNOME, the desktop environment appears to shut down, but then I am faced with a black/blank screen. I expect to be returned to my command prompt from which I typed startx. Instead I have to hard reboot to get back to a login prompt. Here is what my .xinitrc file is currently:
source /sw/bin/init.sh
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
It also happens if I simply use "exec startkde" or "exec gnome-session" in .xinitrc.
Any ideas?
Best,
Brent
