When X quits, you *are* actually back at the command prompt, you just don't see it. Blindly typing "exit" or "Ctrl-d" gives you back a genuine command prompt. No need to reboot.
I dont know if this instruction is still relevant. I thought this behavior had been fixed in recent versions of XDarwin.
