I had the same problem but was able to install manually. However, after everything updated, I started up X11 and waited for the new Gnome screen. In the process, I was treated to a number of error screeens which told me I wasn't connected properly to the config server. When gnome finally appeared (the browser), every time an action was attempted the error messages (multiple) reappeared.

I needed immediate relief since I'm using gnumeric constantly, so I replaced /sw with a recent backup and went back to the old gnome.

What ticks me a bit is that 1) while I received the notification that Gnome2 was being posted, I didn't expect my regular selfupdate-cvs / update-all routine would wipe out my working stuff (which is how my Gnome2 upgrade occurred) and, 2) perhaps this is the final indicator that I belong in the "fink-beginners" group and should stay away from "unstable" packages!

I tried to install manually but no luck. In the finkcommander list, it does
not even show gnome-vfs2-ssl. I have tried multiple selfupdate-cvs
operations from the command line as well as via finkCommander. I also redid
scan packages but nothing new shows up in the package list that resembles
this package name. Here are some of the name that come close from fink
commander.
