env WINDOW_MANAGER=metacity.
Then move .gnome* and .gcon* to a safe place. (I don't know which of these is necessary, as I moved the lot, but not moving them definitely does not work.)
More info about this can be obtained by typing "info gnome" in a terminal.
I didn't like gnome2 at first, but it's not too bad once you configure it.
OT: Mac OS X 10.2.4 is out.
