If you created your .xinitrc by copying the system version, then you probably have a line like
twm & in it. Replace twm with icewm. I'll refer you to http://homepage.mac.com/sao1/fink/index.html#top15, which is a page that Pedro Massobrio set up--the link should point you to the .xinitrc section.
