Hi, Finksters,
I have Gnome2 and MetaCity installed on my machine (TiPB 550). I was
using the X11 installed via Fink before. The setup ran pretty well on my
machine but the speed of window redraw (during size change) was very slow.
I finally decided to give Apple's X11 a chance so I bit the bullet and
took the plunge this morning. Well, my initial impression is that, even with
my somewhat of a slow machine, having the Quartz rendering running in the
system, it is certainly a big improvement.
I played around with 2 settings in my ".xinitrc" file and had the
following to report:
First scenario, running Apple's quartz-wm and Gnome2. The following is
part of my ".xinitrc" file (at the end of the file):
> # start some nice programs
>
> /usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm &
>
> exec gnome-session
My Gnome2 was originally setup to run MetaCity as window manager. However,
when I set to use quartz-wm as the window manager, it neglected MetaCity and
used quartz-wm as the window manager. With this setup, the Gnome2 top menu
bar is located beneath the X11 menu bar. This is how running Xdarwin in the
rootless mode look like too.
Second scenario, running just Gnome2. The following is the corresponding
part of my ".xinitrc" file:
> # start some nice programs
>
> exec gnome-session
In this instance, MetaCity runs as the window manager. However, the Gnome
top menu bar is hidden underneath the X11 menu bar.
So, there you have it. My limited experience so far is that Apple's X11
has significant graphic improvement over the standard Fink installed X11. I
resisted quite a bit from installing Apple's X11 for I feel that the Fink
group worked so hard to get xfree86 ported to Darwin and I am now abandoning
it...sorry!
For those who are waiting to see if Gnome2 works with Apple's X11, my
advice is...Go ahead. However, you will need to use quartz-wm as your window
manager.
On a side note, I also used Theme Changer to modify my OS X graphical
interface from Aqua to other themes. The theme did carry over to quartz-wm.
In addition, one can setup themes (limited) with Nautilus. Nautilus comes
with Gnome2. What I had, then, was a combination of changed OS X theme plus
Nautilus theme. So at this point, if you want different themes in quartz-wm,
you will also need to change your OS X setup. Now, if we can modify
quartz-wm theme...
Hope that this report helps you on your decision making.
