An update to my observation:

In the second scenario, I could not log out of Gnome2 so I had to quit
X11.app to terminate Gnome2. However, that did not terminate the process.
So, when I looked into Process Viewer, metacity, gnome-session and many
gnome related programs were still listed as "Running". Even worse, when I
try to startup X11.app again after quitting as described above, the program
won't start (probably due to Gnome2 and metacity still running). It starts
again after force quitting those processes.

So, I would not recommand run Gnome2 without running quartz-wm.

Cheers,

Chia
