Before trying Fink the OS was upgraded to Mac OS X v. 10.2.3 and the latest Developer Tools
were also installed. Downloaded Fink, tried to install ImageMagick with Fink and believe I dug
a deeper hole.

The Fink site gives reasons to use Fink, one of which is: "SAFETY
...Fink's strict non-interference policy makes sure that the vulnerable
parts of you Mac OS X system are not touched. You can update Mac OS X
without fear that it will step on Fink's toes and vice versa. Also, the
packaging system lets you safely remove software you no longer need."

Perhaps I should have read this more carefully but I was emboldened to
the extent that I Installed Fink and its entourage on top of my
painfully wrought (and sweetly running) installation of IRAF with
xfree86, X11, xgterm, and ds9.

While I was in the middle of the Fink installation that program gave me
this: "Remove the X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11

OR,

If you want to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp.
system-xtools instead to make this known to Fink's package system."

Unfortunately, I could not find any "system-xfree86 resp.
system-xtools" or even anything close to it.

Then Fink insisted (or so it seemed to me) that I remove the X11 that
was part of the IRAF package at Rice Univ. last November when I
installed it.
Then Fink or I installed something like xfree86-base, etc.

NOW, the only code still working is iraf itself. Everything else
crashes at start-up, including ImageMagick, OroborOS X, xgterm, and
ds9. I'll probably remember more after I click on "send."

I greatly respect the work done by the Fink team members, and I only
wish I could execute their instructions properly. This might indeed be
my goof-up.

Any help gratefully received,

Pat
