To solve the issue, go to Terminal / Window settings (in the Terminal menu of the menu bar), then select "display" in the top pop-up menu, and try changing the character encoding at the bottom of the window. Mine was UTF-8, and changing it to Western (ISO Latin 1) solved the issue.
