I'm not sure. I know what to do for Apple X11, but I don't know how to connect it up with your problem.
People did write in with PATH problems with X11-based emacs, and what was determined is that one really couldn't add to the PATH within emacs. My suggestion would be to see if your PATH as shown within eshell has /usr/local/bin in it, and if so, you could make symbolic links there to whatever items aren't being found under /sw .
