That's probably the problem, then.  I remember seeing messages about what
you have to do fix things up for perl 5.8, but I don't recall the specifics.
Check the list archives.

I'm not really certain. I am running OS X 10.2.5. I THINK, but can't say for
sure, that I downloaded a newer version of perl when I read that the OS X
version was not current. I have never used either one! (As you can tell,
I've been a GUI-only user for years, although I had a history before 1993 as
a system manager and programmer on VAX computers, when I was familiar with
C, Pascal, and assembler programming.) I've purchased a couple of books on
perl and have also installed MacPerl, always intending to make use of perl,
but lacking the time to do so.

So, how to determine what version of perl? Let me try on my own...

When I typed "man perl" it identifies itself as perl 5.8.0.
