Ludwin,

Have you tried rebooting in single-user mode? Hold down Command-S after the startup chime.

I have had a different problem: sometimes when I bring my iBook out of sleep, the monitor stays black. I know the computer is still doing something because the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights work, but nothing I do will bring the screen back up (except an unsafe power-off and reboot).

I think the software probably still works... I hear sounds when I press
keys... If it were a PC running Linux or Windows, I could restart in console
mode, but as it is a Mac, the computer is presently out of use. I will have
to bring it to a shop and ask for advice...
