I believe this is due to ongoing issues between the Fink freetype libraries and those that come with X11/XFree86. Try uninstalling freetype2-shlibs (probably by force, e.g. "sudo dpkg -r --force-all freetype2-shlibs" ), and then reinstall it after you're done building.
