"-shlibs" refers to "shared libraries". This is an example of a "splitoff", which means that when you build a package, it gets divided into several different parts. This is covered in some detail in the Packaging Manual:

-threaded, though it looks similar, is not a splitoff option. This means that the package was compiled with support for threaded versions of XFree86 (4.2.1.1-threaded or >= 4.3.x).
Some other options that are marked out in suffixes to distinguish features that are offered are:
-xft1 | xft2: basically this boils down which version of XFree86 is used
-nox: don't support XFree86
-ssl: add in SSL encryption support
...
It gets really ugly when you have mutliple suffixes from splitoffs and options, e.g. kdebase3-ssl-dev .

I suppose that if I chose root3-threaded, it would install root3-threaded -shlibs as well...
Could someone spare the time to explain what are these -shlibs and -threaded options?
It's probably so basic that I can't find the explanation in simple (for me) terms...
