I'm quoting the official position of the Fink development team (in a news item at the Fink homepage at http://fink.sourceforge.net). There may be unforeseen ramifications from installing the gcc3.3 update.

As a concrete example: just installing the update caused problems with g77, even when gcc_select 3.1 was used--a new assembler was installed by the update. This has since been fixed, but does illustrate the need for caution.

Also, you need to make sure not to mix and match compiler versions for Fink software: if you compile something with 3.1, stick with 3.1 for all of your Fink stuff.

Hello,

There's a handy little tool called gcc_select that
will let you choose what gcc version to use when you
have several installed.

If you for some reason require 3.3, you could simply
issue "gcc_select 3.1" before executing any fink
commands and then "gcc_select 3.3" when you're done.

Run "gcc_select --list" to display available compiler
versions you can choose from.

Even though I'm terribly jealous, yes, you should avoid the gcc3.3 update
for now.

I just got my new G5 system setup. Yeah!! It is the 1.6GHz version. I just
added a Gig to the 256M that came with it. Now I am in heaven.
I am getting ready to get fink running on it. I noticed that it has
packages for the Dec2002 Dev Tools as well as a G5 update which includes gcc
3.3. My assumption at the moment from news at the fink site is that I should
install the Dec2002 DevTools, but not the updater due to the current G++
issue.
Is this correct? Does anyone else know of anything I should be looking out
for.
Thanks a bunch,
